UMass Amherst vs Temple for communications: which is better for a career in media and PR?

I’m trying to choose between UMass Amherst and Temple for communications, and I want to focus on the school that would give me the strongest path into media or PR.

I’m a high school senior trying to pick a major and school where I’ll actually get useful experience, internships, and networking in the field.

The biggest practical tradeoff is campus resources versus city access. UMass Amherst has a strong, well-resourced communication program and a classic residential college experience, while Temple puts you in Philadelphia, where media, PR, and internship opportunities are much easier to reach during the school year. For media and public relations specifically, that location advantage matters a lot because the field is driven by hands-on experience, networking, and semester-time internships.

Temple has a real edge if your goal is to start building a resume early. Its Philadelphia setting makes it easier to intern with agencies, nonprofits, news outlets, sports organizations, and corporate communications teams without waiting for summer. Temple is also known for practical, career-oriented programs and strong ties to the city’s employers, which can make the path into media production, publicity, and communications work feel more direct.

UMass Amherst is still a very solid option, especially if you want a broader university environment with strong academics and a more traditional campus life. You can absolutely reach media or PR from UMass, but you may need to be more intentional about finding off-campus opportunities, especially during the academic year. A lot of students there rely more heavily on campus media, student organizations, alumni networking, and summer internships in Boston, New York, or elsewhere.

If you are specifically thinking about PR, communications strategy, journalism-adjacent work, content creation, or media relations, Temple is likely the more practical choice because the professional ecosystem is right around you. If you are less certain about your exact path and care a lot about the broader flagship-school experience, UMass Amherst has appeal, but for career launch in media and PR, Temple has the clearer advantage.
