UMass Amherst vs Temple for city life: which feels more urban as a college experience?

Temple feels much more urban day to day. It is located in North Philadelphia, so the city is not something you visit occasionally, it is the environment around you every time you leave campus. You get dense blocks, public transit, city traffic, rowhouse neighborhoods, and easy access to Center City and other parts of Philadelphia without needing a car.

Temple is the better match for someone who wants campus and city life to blend together. There are SEPTA regional rail, subway, and bus connections right by or near campus, and students regularly move between campus spots and the rest of Philadelphia for food, internships, events, and nightlife. The surrounding area feels active and connected, though it also feels like a real city in every sense, including the need to be street-smart about safety and where you go.

UMass Amherst fits someone who wants a traditional college-town experience with some access to nearby towns, not a truly urban one. Amherst has a classic residential campus feel, and while the Five College area gives you restaurants, coffee shops, and a lively student scene, it is still much more spread out and suburban-rural than Temple. You can get to Northampton or other nearby areas fairly easily, but daily life is centered much more on campus itself than on a major city grid.

For walkability, both schools are walkable within their own student areas, but Temple’s walkability extends into a major city system, while UMass’s is more about moving around campus and nearby college-town spots. If what you want is to feel plugged into an actual city every day, Temple is the clearer answer. If you want a self-contained campus with some off-campus activity nearby, UMass Amherst feels far less urban.
