Is UMass Amherst or the University of New Hampshire more fun as a college experience?
I’m trying to narrow down my college list and both schools seem like they could be a good fit. I care a lot about campus life, social scene, and whether people actually have a good time outside of class.
I know “fun” is subjective, but I’m looking for the general vibe and which one feels more lively overall.

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale and energy versus a smaller, more contained feel. UMass Amherst has a much bigger student body, a more active campus on any given night, and the advantage of being part of the Five College area, which adds concerts, events, buses to nearby campuses, and more people around. UNH tends to feel more close-knit and easier to navigate socially, but it is usually less busy and less varied in what is happening from week to week.
If by “fun” you mean lively overall, UMass Amherst usually has the edge. Amherst has a classic big-state-school atmosphere with lots of clubs, strong school spirit, major dining halls that become social hubs, and more options both on campus and in the surrounding college-town environment. Even students who are not heavily into parties often find plenty to do because there are simply more people, more organizations, and more crossover with the other nearby colleges.
UNH definitely has a social scene too, and Durham is a pleasant college town, but the vibe is calmer. A lot of students like UNH because it feels friendlier and less overwhelming, and there is still plenty of campus involvement, sports, and weekend activity. The difference is that it usually feels more self-contained, with fewer off-campus options immediately around you and a bit less of that constant buzz.
One other factor is what kind of social life you want. UMass gives you more variety, including campus events, bigger crowds, nearby student scenes, and easier access to different kinds of people. UNH can be more appealing if you want a traditional residential campus where it is easy to settle into a community without feeling lost in a huge environment.
