Is UMass Amherst or Stony Brook worth it for undergraduates?
I’m trying to decide whether either of these schools is actually worth the cost and effort of going there. They both seem like solid public universities, but I keep hearing different opinions about the value of the degree and student experience.
I’m mostly looking for a general sense of whether UMass Amherst or Stony Brook is worth it for an undergraduate, especially compared with other in-state or nearby options.

UMass Amherst is usually the more worthwhile undergraduate experience for most students, especially if you care about campus life, breadth of majors, and a more traditional college environment. It has a stronger reputation for the full residential undergraduate experience, a larger range of student activities, and more of a classic college-town feel.
One big differentiator is student experience. UMass Amherst has a much more developed campus culture, with active residential life, major school spirit, and Amherst itself offering a true college-town setting. That tends to matter more than people expect over four years, because it affects community, internships through peer networks, and how enjoyable day-to-day life feels.
Another is academic breadth. UMass Amherst is respected across a wider spread of undergraduate fields, including business, engineering, social sciences, and communications, while Stony Brook’s reputation is especially concentrated in STEM, particularly engineering, computer science, and the sciences.
Cost can shift the answer quite a bit. If Stony Brook is your in-state option and UMass would mean substantially higher out-of-state tuition, then Stony Brook can easily be the smarter value because it is a serious research university with solid outcomes, especially for motivated students. But at similar price points, UMass tends to feel more worth it to undergraduates because students are not just paying for academics, they are also getting a more cohesive campus experience.
The main exception is for students who specifically want a more research-heavy, STEM-centered environment and are comfortable with a campus that many describe as more commuter-influenced and less socially vibrant. In that lane, Stony Brook can be an excellent investment.
