UMass Amherst or Amherst College for economics: which is better overall?

I’m trying to decide between these two schools and economics is the main thing I want to study. I know one is a large public university and the other is a small liberal arts college, but I’m not sure how that affects the economics experience.

I’m mostly trying to understand which one would be the better overall choice for an economics major in terms of academics, faculty access, and preparing for internships or grad school.

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale versus access. UMass Amherst gives you a large university economics department with more course variety, more campus-wide resources, and the energy of a major research university, while Amherst College offers much smaller classes, much closer faculty interaction, and a more individualized academic experience. For economics specifically, that difference matters because Amherst is likely to give you more direct mentoring, while UMass may give you more options and a broader university environment.

In academics, Amherst College has the edge if you value seminar-style discussion, close reading of theory, and professors who are very involved in your development. As a liberal arts college, it is built around undergraduate teaching, and economics students often benefit from easier access to office hours, research relationships, and detailed recommendation letters. That can be especially valuable if you are thinking about a PhD, top master’s programs, or jobs where strong faculty mentorship helps.

UMass Amherst is still a serious place to study economics, and one advantage is the size of the department and the wider university ecosystem. You may find more electives connected to public policy, data analysis, business-related interests, or interdisciplinary work across a big campus. There can also be more structured recruiting activity simply because the university is larger and has more students pursuing many different professional paths.

UMass can absolutely get you to strong internships and graduate programs too, but students often need to be more proactive in navigating a larger system. At Amherst, it is usually easier to stand out academically and build the kind of close relationships that lead to strong research opportunities.

For economics alone, Amherst College is the stronger choice for most students because the teaching quality, faculty access, and mentoring are likely to be better on a day-to-day basis. UMass Amherst becomes very compelling if cost is significantly lower or if you specifically want the scale and breadth of a large public research university.
