Is the University of Maryland or UMass Amherst more fun for college life?

I’m trying to get a feel for which school has a more fun overall college experience, not just academics. I’ve been looking at the University of Maryland and UMass Amherst, and both seem strong, but I care a lot about campus vibe, social life, and whether students actually seem to enjoy being there.

I’m just trying to understand which one has the more fun reputation from a student perspective.

The University of Maryland usually has the livelier overall college-life reputation.

One big difference is the surrounding environment. Maryland students can tap into both a traditional college campus and nearby city options, so social life is not limited to what happens on campus. UMass Amherst has the classic New England college-town feel and the Five College area adds some variety, but it is still more rural and self-contained in day-to-day student life.

Another differentiator is school spirit. Maryland’s athletic culture is more visible, and that often shapes campus energy in a way students notice even if they are not hardcore sports fans. UMass has spirit too, but it usually does not drive the social atmosphere as strongly or as consistently.

The student vibe also tends to come across differently. Maryland often feels more fast-moving, extroverted, and socially busy, with a mix of Greek life, campus events, and off-campus options. UMass is known for a friendly and enjoyable student experience, and plenty of students really like the balance there, but its fun tends to feel more low-key and campus-centered rather than high-energy.

If you mean fun as a bigger, louder, more constantly active social scene, Maryland has the edge. If you picture fun as a relaxed residential campus with strong food, a good community feel, and less pressure to always be out doing something, UMass can still be very appealing.
