Is the University of Maryland or Ohio State considered more prestigious for college admissions and employers?

I’m trying to compare these two schools as a senior and I keep seeing different opinions online. Both seem strong, but people talk about them differently depending on where they live and what major they’re in.

I want to know which one is generally seen as more prestigious overall when it comes to college admissions and job applications.

Ohio State has a slight edge in broad national name recognition, but Maryland is often viewed as a bit more academically distinctive in certain fields, so there is no huge prestige gap overall. For admissions and employers, most people will see both as strong flagship public universities, and the difference is usually smaller than online discussions make it sound. In practice, your major, internships, grades, and location matter more than the school name between these two.

Ohio State tends to carry wider brand familiarity across the country because of its size, alumni network, and visibility. On a resume, that can translate into immediate recognition from employers who may not know much about specific departments.

Maryland stands out more in areas tied to Washington, DC and in programs like computer science, engineering, public policy, government-related fields, and some business pathways. Its proximity to federal agencies, contractors, research institutions, and policy organizations gives it a particularly strong reputation in that corridor. For students aiming at internships and jobs around DC, that can matter more than broad name recognition.

For college admissions, neither school gives you a major prestige boost over the other in a general sense. Graduate schools and employers are much more likely to care about what you did there, and each school can open excellent doors. If you mean overall public perception, Ohio State is probably more famous; if you mean academic reputation in several high-demand fields, Maryland often gets the nod.
