Which is better for a college town: University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or Ohio State?
I’m trying to decide between these two schools and the campus environment matters a lot to me. I want a college town that feels lively but still centered around the university, with stuff to do nearby and a strong student vibe.
Based on the overall college town experience, which one tends to be better?

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: UIUC gives you a more classic college-town feel where the university really defines the area, while Ohio State puts you next to a much larger city with far more off-campus options but a less self-contained campus atmosphere. In Champaign-Urbana, student life spills directly into Campustown, Green Street, and the surrounding neighborhoods, so the university feels like the center of daily life. Around Ohio State, there is plenty happening near campus, but Columbus is a major city, so the atmosphere is broader and less dominated by the school itself.
If your priority is a town that feels built around students, UIUC usually stands out more. The campus blends into Urbana and Champaign in a way that makes restaurants, coffee shops, bars, and student hangouts feel tightly connected to school life. It has that contained, recognizable college-town rhythm where weekends, game days, and even everyday errands tend to feel tied to the university community.
Ohio State has a lively student scene too, especially around High Street and the neighborhoods just off campus. The difference is that Columbus offers a lot beyond the university, which can be a huge plus if you want concerts, pro sports, big-city food options, internships, and neighborhoods with their own identity. But because the city is so much larger, the school does not shape the entire place in the same way UIUC shapes Champaign-Urbana.
For pure college-town experience, UIUC tends to win. Ohio State is stronger if you want a college campus attached to a real city, but if what you mean by “better college town” is lively, student-centered, and clearly revolving around the university, Urbana-Champaign is the more distinctive match.
