Should I use a different admissions strategy for UCLA and UC Santa Barbara?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that UCLA and UC Santa Barbara receive the same core UC application, so you cannot write a separate set of Personal Insight Questions or activities list for each campus. Build one coherent application, but make your major and campus selections deliberately rather than assuming the two campuses will evaluate every academic path in exactly the same way. Your PIQs should reveal qualities, experiences, and intellectual interests that are true across both applications, not try to sound like a different person for each school.

Use the activities section to be concrete about impact, responsibility, and growth. In the PIQs, choose examples that add dimensions not already obvious from your transcript or activity titles. For instance, an intended biology applicant does not need every response to be about biology; a response about family responsibilities, creative work, or community involvement can make the academic interest more credible by showing the person behind it.

Where you should differentiate is in your research and choices within the application. Confirm that the major you select, any alternate-major option available to you, and the academic preparation you report make sense at each campus. Do not select an intended major merely because you think it sounds easier to enter. Your coursework and activities should support the interest you claim, and you should be comfortable pursuing that field if admitted.
