UC Santa Barbara vs UC Berkeley for internship opportunities

I’m trying to decide between UC Santa Barbara and UC Berkeley, and internship access is a big factor for me. I know both schools are strong academically, but I’m wondering which one tends to make it easier for students to find solid internships during the school year and over the summer.

I’m especially interested in how location, alumni connections, and campus recruiting affect internship opportunities at each school.

The biggest practical tradeoff is proximity and density: Berkeley puts you right next to a huge concentration of startups, major tech firms, finance, nonprofits, research labs, and Bay Area employers, while UCSB offers strong opportunities too but usually with less immediate access during the school year. That matters because internships are often easier to pursue when employers are nearby, can recruit on campus often, and can hire students part time during the semester.

For internship access alone, Berkeley usually has the edge. Its location makes it more realistic to interview, network, and work in person during the academic year, especially in tech, business-adjacent roles, public policy, data, and research.

UCSB is not weak here at all, especially for engineering, computer science, research, and certain science fields. It has strong industry ties, a respected reputation, and students do land excellent summer internships. But the Santa Barbara location is a smaller market, so during the school year you may rely more on remote roles, summer recruiting cycles, faculty connections, and traveling for some opportunities.

On alumni connections, both schools have loyal graduates, but Berkeley’s network is larger, more geographically widespread, and especially influential in the Bay Area. That can help with referrals and informational interviews, which matter a lot once you move beyond formal application portals.

If internship opportunity is one of your top deciding factors and you want the easiest access to a wide range of employers, Berkeley is the stronger pick. UCSB can absolutely lead to great outcomes, but Berkeley tends to make the path more direct and more convenient, particularly during the school year.
