What are the current USC essay prompts and how should I approach them?

I'm planning to apply to USC this fall, and I've started working on my college essays. I'm having a bit of trouble finding the most up-to-date list of supplemental essays and short answer prompts for USC. Is there a place where they all get posted, or do people just copy them from the application portal?

Also, if anyone has tips for what USC really looks for in their responses, that would be awesome. I've got lots of ideas but don't know which ones would stand out. I want to make sure my essays really reflect who I am as a student and as a person.

USC typically updates its supplemental essay prompts each year and posts them in the Common Application (once you add USC) as well as on the USC Undergraduate Admission website under their ‘Application Instructions’ or ‘Writing Requirements’ section. Most admissions websites generally update the prompts by early summer, though, so double-checking the official USC admissions page is your safest bet for the most up-to-date info.

For the 2023-2024 cycle (which will likely remain very similar for 2024-2025), USC required the following:

1. A main supplemental essay (250 words):
“Describe how you plan to pursue your academic interests at USC. Please feel free to address your first- and second-choice major selections.”

2. Several short-answer prompts (100 characters each, not words):
- Favorite snack
- Dream job
- Favorite movie
- Dream trip
- What TV show are you binge-watching?
- If your life had a theme song, what would it be?
- Which well-known person or fictional character would be your ideal roommate?
- Favorite book

Some specialized schools or programs (like the Iovine and Young Academy, School of Cinematic Arts, etc.) also ask for extra, program-specific essays, so check what your intended major requires.

Here are some tips for approaching these prompts:
- For the main academic interests essay, be specific about why you’re excited about USC’s resources, courses, programs, or even professors. Go beyond generic statements—maybe there’s a class, a student org, or a research center that connects exactly to your goals. For example, if you’re interested in entrepreneurship, reference the USC Marshall Greif Center or a competition you’d want to join, and connect how this fits your past experiences and future ambitions.

- For the short answers, don’t overthink—show personality! These are quirky, so let your sense of humor or unique taste come through. For instance, if your theme song is "Walking on Sunshine" because you bring positive energy to group projects, say that. With favorite movie or snack, use specifics; if you pick popcorn with chili lime, maybe mention sharing it at family movie nights.

USC values self-awareness, creativity, and genuine enthusiasm for their community. Show how you'll contribute something distinctive—whether that's optimistic energy, a passion for social justice, or simply joy in collaboration. Most importantly, let your authentic voice shine through. Even if your idea feels unusual, as long as it’s true to you, it will stand out.

Good luck with your application! If you’re stuck brainstorming, try reflecting on your moments of growth, odd interests, or small daily joys. Those can make for the most memorable answers.
