Is UC San Diego or Georgia Tech harder to get into?

Georgia Tech is typically harder to get into than UC San Diego, particularly for applicants from outside Georgia and for highly sought-after engineering programs. Both are very selective public universities, but Georgia Tech’s smaller entering class and intense demand from engineering and computing applicants make admission especially difficult. UC San Diego is also a reach-level option for many applicants, especially in popular STEM majors.

Residency changes the comparison substantially. Georgia Tech gives a meaningful admissions advantage to Georgia residents, so an in-state applicant may find it less difficult than an out-of-state applicant with a similar record. UC San Diego, as part of the University of California system, also gives preference to California residents, though its applicant pool is enormous and competitive across the board.

Major choice matters most at Georgia Tech because engineering is central to the institution’s identity and draws a concentrated pool of strong STEM applicants. At UC San Diego, engineering and computer science are likewise highly competitive, while selectivity can vary across academic divisions. Neither school should be treated as a likely admission based on strong grades alone; course rigor, academic preparation in math and science, and the overall application all matter.
