UCLA vs UChicago for economics: which is better for an undergrad student?

I'm trying to decide between UCLA and UChicago for economics and I keep seeing people describe them very differently. I’m interested in studying econ as an undergrad and want to understand which school is generally stronger for that major.

I’m mostly looking at the academic reputation and overall strength of the econ program, not just the campus vibe.

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale versus intensity. UCLA offers a large, very well-regarded economics department within a broad public research university, while UChicago is more tightly identified with economics itself and has a stronger reputation for rigorous, theory-heavy undergraduate study in the field.

For pure academic reputation in economics, UChicago has the edge. Economics is one of the university’s signature disciplines, the department is internationally influential, and that reputation carries down to the undergraduate level in a way that is unusually visible. If someone is asking which school is more synonymous with econ as an academic subject, the answer is UChicago.

That said, UCLA is absolutely strong. It has a respected economics department, substantial course offerings, strong faculty, and access to the resources of a major research university in a huge economic and business hub. For many undergrads, especially those who want flexibility, a wider range of related departments, and a less singularly economics-centered academic culture, UCLA can still be an excellent place to study the subject.

The real difference is how central econ feels to the institution’s intellectual identity. At UChicago, economics tends to be more embedded in the school’s academic culture, and the coursework is often perceived as more analytical and demanding in a classic econ-theory sense. UCLA’s program is strong, but the school’s overall identity is spread across many outstanding areas rather than being especially defined by economics.

If the question is simply which undergraduate economics program is stronger on reputation and academic distinctiveness, I would pick UChicago. UCLA remains a very good option, but UChicago is the one more likely to stand out specifically for economics in the eyes of academics, graduate programs, and people familiar with the field.
