UC Davis vs Cal Poly for engineering jobs: which school has stronger career outcomes?

I’m trying to decide between UC Davis and Cal Poly for engineering, and I keep hearing different opinions about job prospects after graduation. I know both are respected schools, but I’m mostly interested in which one tends to lead to better engineering job opportunities and recruiting outcomes.

I’m not asking about campus life or prestige, just how the two schools compare for getting engineering jobs after college.

For engineering jobs specifically, Cal Poly SLO usually has the edge in immediate recruiting and first-job readiness. Its learn-by-doing model, required or strongly encouraged project work, and very employer-visible engineering programs tend to translate into strong internship pipelines and practical experience by graduation. UC Davis also places engineers well, especially in larger-company and research-linked paths, but Cal Poly is more often the school people associate with being job-ready right out of undergrad.

Cal Poly tends to fit the student who wants industry exposure early and often. Engineering there is known for hands-on labs, senior projects, student design teams, and a culture where internships and applied technical experience are central.

UC Davis makes more sense for the student who wants stronger access to a big research university ecosystem while still having solid job outcomes. That can matter if you may want to explore specialties connected to research labs, graduate school, interdisciplinary work, or fields tied to biotech, energy, transportation, and computer engineering in a broader university setting. Davis engineers do get hired well, but the path can feel a bit less plug-and-play than Cal Poly’s very career-oriented undergraduate model.

If your question is narrowly about recruiting outcomes right after a bachelor’s degree, I’d lean Cal Poly. If you want engineering job options plus the flexibility of a UC research environment, Davis is still a strong choice and can absolutely lead to excellent outcomes.
