Which is better for pre-med, UC Davis or San Diego State?
I’m a high school senior deciding between these two schools and want to choose the one that would be better for a pre-med path. I know both can lead to medical school, but I’m trying to figure out which environment is generally stronger for preparing for med school and staying on track as an undergrad.

For most students aiming at medical school, UC Davis offers the stronger pre-med environment. It has a major academic medical center, a well-established health and biological sciences ecosystem, and more built-in research and clinical connections tied to a large research university. San Diego State can still work well for pre-med, especially for a student who wants a more undergraduate-centered setting, but Davis usually gives you a deeper bench of pre-med resources on campus.
UC Davis tends to fit the student who wants lots of science options, access to faculty research labs, and a campus where pre-health is a very common path. Its connection to UC Davis Health is a real advantage because it creates a clearer pipeline to medically related volunteering, shadowing, and research opportunities, even though you still have to be proactive. If you are excited by biology, neuroscience, public health, or related fields and want to be surrounded by a large pre-med community, Davis is often the more natural home.
It is also a good match for someone comfortable in a big university where competition exists but opportunities are broad. You may need to work harder to stand out, find mentors, and build close relationships with professors, especially in large intro science courses. But if you take initiative, Davis gives you more of the classic research-university pre-med experience.
San Diego State makes more sense for a student who wants a somewhat more personal undergraduate atmosphere and may value smaller-feeling academic communities. SDSU has solid science preparation and being in San Diego can help with off-campus hospital, clinic, and biotech opportunities. For a disciplined student who will actively seek out clinical exposure and advising, it can absolutely lead to medical school.
Where SDSU can appeal is if you think you will do better academically in a setting that feels less overwhelming. GPA matters a lot for med school, so an environment where you can thrive, build faculty relationships, and avoid getting lost can be a real plus. But in terms of overall pre-med infrastructure, research intensity, and direct health-system connections, UC Davis has the edge.
