For an in-state student, UC Davis is typically more expensive overall on the official cost of attendance, especially if you live on campus or use the school’s standard housing and meal estimates. SDSU often comes in lower on direct university charges, but the gap can shrink if you end up paying a lot for housing near campus.

At UC Davis, the main reason the total is higher is the UC tuition structure and campus-based fees. Even before personal expenses and transportation, in-state students usually see a higher baseline price than they would at a CSU campus like SDSU. That said, Davis housing is not automatically cheap, so room and board still matter a lot in the final number.

At San Diego State, tuition for California residents is usually lower because it is part of the CSU system. The complicating factor is San Diego’s rental market, which can be expensive, especially after the first year if you move off campus. If you commute from home, SDSU can become much cheaper than UC Davis.

So if you are comparing the published full cost for a typical in-state student, UC Davis is usually the more expensive option. If your actual plan involves living at home or finding lower-cost housing near SDSU, San Diego State can be noticeably cheaper in practice.
