UC Berkeley vs UChicago for economics: which is better for undergraduate economics?

I’m a high school senior trying to decide between UC Berkeley and UChicago for economics. I know both are strong schools, but I’m mainly trying to understand which one is generally better for an undergraduate econ major.

I’m interested in things like the strength of the department, how rigorous the classes are, and how well the major prepares students for grad school or jobs in finance, consulting, or policy.

For undergraduate economics, UChicago has the edge if you care most about depth of economic training and academic rigor. Its economics department is one of the defining centers of the field, and that shows up at the undergraduate level through a strongly theory-driven curriculum, intense quantitative expectations, and a culture where economics is unusually central to campus intellectual life.

One concrete difference is how the subject is taught. UChicago’s Core and econ curriculum push students hard on analytical reasoning, models, and close engagement with economic thought, so the major tends to feel tightly structured and academically serious from the start. Berkeley’s economics major is also excellent, but at a very large public university it can feel less intimate, with bigger classes and more variation in how directly students connect with faculty early on.

For grad school preparation, UChicago is especially strong because undergraduates are surrounded by a department with enormous influence in economic research, and the major is well aligned with the kind of mathematical and conceptual training PhD programs value. Berkeley can absolutely get students to top graduate programs too, especially students who seek out research and advanced coursework, but UChicago more consistently builds that preparation into the undergraduate experience itself.

For jobs, both schools place well, but in somewhat different ways. Berkeley benefits from its Bay Area location, huge alumni network, and strong pipeline into finance, consulting, and tech-adjacent roles. UChicago also places very well into finance and consulting, and its economics brand carries particular weight with employers who value quantitative rigor. If the question is which school is better specifically for studying economics as an undergraduate discipline, not just majoring in econ while accessing good recruiting, UChicago comes out ahead.
