UC Berkeley vs UC Davis for biology: which is better for an undergraduate biology major?

I’m a high school senior deciding between UC Berkeley and UC Davis for biology. Both seem like strong options, but I keep seeing different opinions about which one is better for undergrad research, classes, and preparing for something like med school or grad school.

I’m trying to understand which school is generally the stronger choice for a biology major.

UC Berkeley has the edge for an undergraduate biology major. It offers a broader concentration of high-profile biology research across areas like molecular biology, genetics, ecology, and integrative biology, and that depth can matter if you want maximum academic range and strong preparation for research-focused grad paths. Berkeley also carries especially strong name recognition in the life sciences, which can help when applying for research programs, labs, and graduate study.

The biggest difference is the academic ecosystem. Berkeley’s biology-related departments and affiliated research institutes create more overlap between disciplines, so an undergrad interested in combining biology with data science, public health, chemistry, or environmental science usually has more options in one place. That can be especially useful if your interests are still shifting within biology rather than locked into a single track.

Research access is the most common concern, and this is where the answer gets more nuanced. Berkeley has outstanding research, but because it is a very large and intense environment, students often need to be proactive to get into labs early. UC Davis is excellent here too, and some undergrads find it easier to build relationships with faculty because the atmosphere can feel less competitive and more student-centered. For fields tied to animal biology, agriculture, ecology, environmental biology, and veterinary-adjacent work, Davis is particularly strong.

For premed preparation, either school can get you there, but Berkeley’s grading culture is often seen as tougher, which can make maintaining a very high GPA more challenging. Davis can be a more comfortable place for some students to thrive academically while still getting strong science training, advising, and research opportunities.
