UC Berkeley vs Georgia Tech for computer science: which is better overall?

I’m trying to decide between UC Berkeley and Georgia Tech for computer science, and both seem like strong options. I care most about the CS program itself, the learning environment, and how well each school prepares students for internships and jobs.

I know they’re both well respected, but I’m having a hard time comparing them in a meaningful way. I want to understand which one is generally considered the stronger choice for CS overall.

For computer science, UC Berkeley usually has the edge in overall prestige, research depth, and direct access to the Bay Area tech ecosystem. Berkeley’s EECS and L&S CS programs are both extremely well known, major tech employers recruit there heavily, and the campus has unusually close ties to startups, labs, and companies in Silicon Valley.

Berkeley fits the student who wants to be surrounded by a very intense, theory-strong CS culture and is excited by a fast-moving environment with lots of ambitious peers. It is especially appealing for students interested in cutting-edge research, startup culture, AI, systems, or being close to major tech firms during the school year. The tradeoff is that Berkeley can feel more competitive and less personally structured, so students often need to be proactive about finding support, opportunities, and community.

Georgia Tech is a terrific option for the student who wants a top CS education in a more structured, practical, and often more balanced environment. Its College of Computing is one of the strongest in the country, the program is excellent for internships and career preparation, and Atlanta gives students strong access to industry as well. Tech is especially attractive for students who value hands-on learning, clear academic pathways, and a campus culture that can feel more engineering-centered and professionally focused.

For internships and jobs, both schools open real doors. Berkeley may carry slightly more weight in certain elite tech and startup circles because of its location and brand in CS, while Georgia Tech is exceptionally respected by employers and often stands out for producing students with strong technical preparation and applied experience.
