Tufts vs BU for internships and jobs: which has better recruiting and career opportunities?

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: BU gives you a more built-in internship ecosystem during the school year because it is embedded in Boston and runs on a structure that strongly supports work experience, while Tufts often offers a somewhat smaller, more personal network and advising environment that can feel easier to navigate one-on-one. At BU, proximity to downtown employers, its large alumni base, and its long-standing emphasis on internships and professional preparation make finding semester-time opportunities especially realistic. At Tufts, students also access Boston-area internships, but the campus setting in Medford means the day-to-day connection to employers can feel a bit less immediate.

For internships specifically, BU has a noticeable edge in volume and convenience. Its location makes it easier to commute to hospitals, startups, nonprofits, finance firms, media organizations, and other employers during the academic year, and many students build internships into their semesters. BU’s scale also means a broad range of employer relationships across fields, especially in business, communications, health-related areas, and applied sciences.

Tufts is still very strong, especially if you value individualized support and a student body that often leans toward interdisciplinary, international, pre-health, policy, and research-oriented paths. The advising culture can feel more personal, and Tufts has strong placement into graduate school, research roles, consulting, nonprofits, and selective early-career tracks. Its alumni network is influential, though not as sheerly expansive as BU’s.

For recruiting, the answer depends somewhat on field. BU tends to have the more visible on-campus career infrastructure and employer traffic simply because of size, city integration, and professional programming. Tufts can punch above its size in certain fields, but BU usually offers more total listings, events, and local employer access.

If your main question is which school makes internships during the year and early job exploration feel easier on a practical level, BU has the clearer advantage. On pure recruiting access and internship convenience, I’d lean BU.
