How do Tufts and BU compare in reputation with employers and grad schools?
I’m trying to understand how these two schools are viewed outside of the college admissions bubble. I know both are well known, but I keep hearing different opinions about which one has the stronger reputation.
I’m mostly curious about how employers and graduate programs tend to see Tufts versus BU.

The biggest practical difference is breadth versus selectivity of brand. Boston University has a larger, more visible national presence because of its scale, professional schools, and huge alumni network, while Tufts often carries a slightly more selective, more intimate academic reputation, especially in traditional academic and pre-professional circles. In actual employer and grad school outcomes, both are well respected, and the gap is smaller than people make it sound.
With employers, BU’s name tends to travel very well because it has strong reach in business, communications, engineering, health-related fields, and media, plus a very large alumni base in major cities. For internships and first jobs, that size and visibility can matter. Tufts is also well regarded by employers, but its reputation often feels more tied to intellectual rigor, strong writing and analysis, and a polished liberal arts research-university profile.
With graduate and professional schools, Tufts often gets a bit more of the “academically elite private university” halo, especially among people already familiar with higher ed. That does not mean BU is viewed weakly at all. BU has serious credibility, especially through its research activity and strong schools in medicine, public health, law, business, and engineering. Grad programs are usually far more focused on your grades, research, recommendations, and coursework than on splitting hairs between these two names.
Outside the Northeast, BU may be recognized more quickly by the average employer simply because of its size and visibility. Tufts may get a slightly stronger reaction from some academics and certain graduate admissions readers who associate it with a smaller, more selective undergraduate experience. Neither school is the kind of place where the name will hold you back.
