How does Tufts campus size compare to Boston University, and what does that feel like as a student?

I’m trying to get a better sense of the day-to-day difference between the two schools. Tufts seems more contained, while BU looks much more spread out along the city.

I’m wondering how the campus size affects things like walking between classes, seeing people you know, and overall campus vibe.

Tufts does feel much more contained than Boston University, and that changes daily life in noticeable ways. Tufts’ main undergraduate campus is centered on Medford and Somerville around the academic quad and residential areas, so it tends to feel like a traditional campus where most things are close together. BU stretches for a long distance along Commonwealth Avenue in Boston, so it feels more like living and studying across a section of the city than being on one compact campus.

At Tufts, walking between classes is usually pretty manageable, and the hill is the part students talk about most rather than sheer distance. You are more likely to run into the same people regularly, especially in dining halls, on the quad, or moving between a few central academic buildings. That creates a tighter, more familiar social atmosphere, which many students experience as more community-oriented and less anonymous.

BU fits students who like energy, movement, and the feeling that campus blends directly into city life. Getting across BU can take longer simply because of how linear the campus is, and your day may involve more planning around where classes are located. The upside is that the environment feels very active and urban, with easy access to Boston woven into everyday student life rather than separated from it.

So in practice, Tufts often feels smaller than it may look on a map because student life is concentrated, while BU often feels bigger because the campus is spread across a long corridor. If you care a lot about seeing familiar faces often and having a more enclosed campus rhythm, Tufts usually delivers that more clearly. If you like the idea of your college experience unfolding in the middle of a city block by block, BU’s layout is a big part of its appeal.
