Binghamton vs George Mason for internship opportunities: which is better?

I’m trying to decide between Binghamton and George Mason, and internships are a big factor for me. I want a school where it’s realistic to get good internship opportunities during the school year or over the summer.

I’m mostly interested in which school tends to offer better access to internships and career connections overall.

For internship access, George Mason usually has the clearer edge because of where it is. Being in Northern Virginia puts Mason students close to Washington, DC, federal agencies, contractors, nonprofits, policy organizations, and a large corporate job market, which makes in-semester internships much more realistic. Mason also has strong ties to government, public policy, tech, cybersecurity, business, and public service employers in the DC area.

George Mason makes the most sense for the student who wants internships woven into the school year, not just saved for summer. If you can picture yourself commuting to an internship during the semester, networking with employers in the DC region, or exploring fields tied to government, consulting, data, international affairs, or tech, Mason offers a practical advantage. Its location is the biggest factor here, and for many students that matters more than almost anything a career center can promise.

Binghamton can still work very well for the student who is comfortable being more strategic and planning farther ahead. It has a strong alumni base in New York, and good access to summer internships, especially if you are aiming for NYC, accounting, finance, some business paths, healthcare-related areas, or research. But because Binghamton is not in a major metro area, during-the-semester internships are less convenient, so students often rely more on summers, breaks, remote roles, or travel.

If your priority is maximizing day-to-day internship access and career connections while you are still enrolled, George Mason is the more internship-friendly option overall. If you care more about a traditional campus experience and are fine concentrating your internship search on summers and larger city pipelines later, Binghamton is still a strong school, just less naturally positioned for constant nearby opportunities.
