Princeton or Dartmouth for outdoor activities: which campus has better access to hiking, skiing, and general outdoor life?

The biggest practical tradeoff is immediate access versus polished campus convenience: Dartmouth puts you in a much more outdoor-centered setting with easier access to hiking, skiing, and river life, while Princeton gives you a beautiful campus and some nearby nature but far less of that everyday mountain-town feel. Dartmouth is in Hanover, New Hampshire, right by the Connecticut River and close to trail networks, and students make real use of the Dartmouth Outing Club, which is one of the oldest and most active collegiate outing programs in the country. Princeton has pleasant green space, walking paths, and access to parks and preserves, but it is not surrounded by the same kind of rugged outdoor infrastructure.

For hiking, Dartmouth is the clear winner. The Appalachian Trail literally runs through Hanover, and there are plenty of nearby trails for quick day hikes or more serious weekend outings. At Princeton, you can certainly get outside, but hiking usually feels more like a planned trip than an organic part of campus life.

For skiing, Dartmouth also has the stronger setup. Dartmouth Skiway is relatively close and very much part of student outdoor culture, and northern New England gives you more realistic access to frequent winter sports. Princeton students can ski on breaks or by organizing trips, but it is not nearly as embedded in the weekly rhythm of campus.

For general outdoor life, Dartmouth tends to feel more active and convenient for students who want that to be part of their routine, not just an occasional weekend plan. Canoeing, cabin trips, winter outings, and outdoor traditions are more visible there. Princeton is more suburban and connected to major cities, which brings other advantages, but for someone prioritizing hiking, skiing, and an outdoorsy student culture, Dartmouth stands out more clearly.
