Which school is better for internship opportunities: Ohio State or Purdue?

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale versus specialization. Ohio State gives you access to a huge university, a major city nearby, and a very broad employer network, while Purdue tends to be especially strong at channeling students, particularly in engineering and technical fields, into structured recruiting pipelines with employers that regularly hire interns. If your main concern is how easy it is to plug into internship recruiting, Purdue often has a slight edge for technical majors, but Ohio State can be just as strong or better in business, healthcare, policy, and other fields tied to Columbus.

Purdue has a long-established reputation with employers in engineering, computer science, aviation, and related industries. Companies that recruit there often do so very intentionally, and students in those majors benefit from a campus culture that is closely tied to internships, co-ops, and industry hiring. For students in STEM, that can make the path feel more direct.

Ohio State’s advantage is breadth and location. Columbus is a large and growing city with strong access to finance, insurance, healthcare, retail, logistics, government, and tech-related opportunities, and that matters because local internships during the school year can be easier to maintain. Ohio State’s size also means a massive alumni network and lots of employer presence across many different industries.

The practical answer is that neither school leaves students short on opportunities, but the experience can feel different. At Purdue, internship access often feels more concentrated and employer-driven in technical areas. At Ohio State, opportunities can feel more spread across industries, with especially good options for students who want to combine campus recruiting with city-based networking.

If you are choosing for engineering, CS, or another highly technical path, I’d lean Purdue. If you want broader industry flexibility or expect to benefit from being connected to a major metro during the academic year, Ohio State is very compelling.
