Northeastern or UMass Amherst for computer science careers?

I’m trying to choose between Northeastern and UMass Amherst for computer science, and my main goal is to be in a strong position for internships and a job after graduation.

Both schools seem solid for CS, but I’m not sure which one is generally better for career outcomes and employer opportunities.

Northeastern has the edge for computer science careers if your top priority is internship volume and building work experience before graduation. Its co-op system is the biggest differentiator: students commonly graduate with substantial full-time, paid experience, and that matters a lot in software hiring. Being in Boston also helps with access to tech employers, startups, and alumni connections during the school year.

The co-op structure is not just a side opportunity at Northeastern, it is built into how many students plan their academics and recruiting. For CS students, that usually means more chances to test different roles, strengthen a resume early, and convert experience into return offers or stronger full-time recruiting outcomes. Employers know Northeastern for this, which gives the school a practical career identity that is especially useful in tech.

UMass Amherst is still excellent in CS, and its department has a very strong academic reputation with serious recruiting. If you are self-directed, you can absolutely land strong internships and jobs from UMass, including at major tech companies. The difference is that you may need to be a bit more proactive about stitching together internships, networking, and experience in the way Northeastern more deliberately structures for you.

Cost should matter here too, because for many students UMass Amherst is substantially less expensive, especially in-state. If the price gap is large, UMass can be the smarter decision because strong CS students there still do very well in the job market. But on career setup alone, especially for internship-heavy preparation, Northeastern is the one I’d pick.
