Which is better for engineering: Middlebury or Lehigh?

Lehigh is the clearer choice if engineering is your main goal. It has a dedicated engineering college, a much broader set of undergraduate engineering majors and facilities, and a campus culture where engineering is one of the school’s central strengths. Middlebury is an excellent liberal arts college, but it does not offer the same kind of traditional undergraduate engineering pathway on its own campus.

For a student who wants a full engineering experience from day one, Lehigh fits much better. That usually means more specialized coursework, more engineering faculty, more lab infrastructure, and more classmates headed into engineering internships and industry roles.

Middlebury makes more sense for someone who wants a liberal arts environment first and is open to a less direct route into engineering. Its strength is broad intellectual exploration, close faculty interaction, and strong academics across the humanities, social sciences, languages, and sciences. Students interested in engineering there typically look at pre-engineering or dual-degree options rather than a standard standalone engineering school experience.

Middlebury can still be a great place for a student who values interdisciplinary study and may want to combine science with policy, economics, or environmental work, but it is not the more straightforward engineering choice.

So if the question is simply which school is better for undergraduate engineering, the answer is Lehigh by a fairly wide margin. Middlebury is the stronger option only for a student who is intentionally choosing a liberal arts college experience and is comfortable pursuing engineering through a more indirect structure.
