Middlebury vs UVA for economics: which is better for an undergrad economics major?

I’m trying to decide between Middlebury and UVA and I’m planning to study economics in college. Both seem strong overall, but I’m mostly interested in the economics program itself and how it feels as an undergrad.

I’m trying to understand which school would give me a better experience for learning economics and building a strong academic foundation.

The biggest tradeoff is scale: UVA gives you a much larger economics ecosystem with more course variety, research activity, and recruiting volume, while Middlebury offers a smaller, more intimate academic setting where economics majors often get closer access to professors. For an undergrad focused mainly on the economics program itself, UVA tends to have the broader platform, and Middlebury tends to have the more personal classroom experience. Neither is weak in economics, but they feel quite different day to day.

At UVA, economics is one of the university’s established strengths, and the department benefits from being part of a large research university. That usually means more upper-level electives, more faculty working across different subfields, and a bigger peer group of students interested in economics, policy, business, and finance.

Middlebury’s advantage is the liberal arts college model. Classes are more likely to be discussion-oriented, and faculty interaction is often easier to access early on. If you learn best through close mentorship, frequent writing, and a classroom environment where professors know you well, Middlebury can be excellent preparation for graduate study or any path where analytical thinking and communication matter as much as technical training.

For pure academic breadth in undergraduate economics, UVA has the edge. For individualized attention and a tighter-knit intellectual environment, Middlebury is very appealing. If the choice is specifically about which school offers the stronger undergraduate economics platform overall, I would lean UVA, unless you strongly prefer the small liberal arts setting that Middlebury does especially well.
