Is Harvard or Northwestern generally considered more prestigious?

I keep hearing different opinions about school prestige, and both Harvard and Northwestern come up a lot. I’m trying to understand how people usually compare them in terms of overall reputation.

I know fit matters too, but I’m mainly asking about the general prestige comparison between the two schools.

The biggest practical tradeoff is global name recognition versus excellent but more field-specific reputation. Harvard has broader, instant prestige with the general public, employers, and international audiences, while Northwestern is highly respected but tends to get slightly more of its strongest reputation from particular areas like journalism, communication, theater, economics, and some pre-professional paths.

In everyday perception, Harvard is usually considered more prestigious overall. Its name carries unusual weight across industries and countries, and it has a longer-standing place in the public imagination as one of the most famous universities in the world. Northwestern is absolutely seen as an elite university, but it is not typically placed in the exact same overall prestige tier in casual conversation.

That said, the gap is often smaller than people assume in settings that are informed and field-specific. Among recruiters, graduate schools, and people familiar with top universities, Northwestern is viewed as a top-tier institution with a very strong academic reputation. In some disciplines, especially Medill, theater, and certain communication-related fields, Northwestern can be every bit as impressive in practice.

So if the question is strictly overall prestige, Harvard is the clearer answer. Northwestern is still a very prestigious school, but Harvard has the stronger all-purpose brand name and broader reputation almost everywhere.
