Is Harvard or Stanford generally harder to get into?

The biggest practical difference is not a dependable gap in admission difficulty, but the kind of community and academic environment you would be choosing after admission. Harvard and Stanford both receive exceptionally strong applicant pools and make holistic decisions that go well beyond grades and testing. At either school, excellent academics are necessary but do not make admission predictable.

A simple comparison of admit rates would not settle the question, even when one school’s rate happens to be lower in a particular year. The number of available places, the mix of applicants, institutional priorities, and how many applicants apply early can shift from cycle to cycle. An applicant who feels especially compelling at one school because of their interests, essays, recommendations, and intended campus involvement may not have the same relative odds at the other.

For building a list, treat both as reaches and avoid choosing between them based on a perceived admissions advantage. Apply to the one or both whose academic offerings, campus culture, location, and opportunities genuinely fit your goals.
