Harvard vs Cornell for pre-vet: which is better for preparing for veterinary school?

I’m a high school senior trying to decide between these two schools because I want to go to vet school later. I know both are strong academically, but I’m trying to understand which one is generally the better choice for a pre-vet path.

I’m mainly looking at how well each school can support the classes, advising, and experiences that matter for vet school preparation.

Cornell is the stronger choice for pre-vet preparation. It has its own College of Veterinary Medicine on campus, which gives undergraduates unusually direct access to veterinary faculty, clinical settings, animal-related research, and a campus culture where pre-vet is a familiar path rather than a niche interest. That matters because vet school preparation depends heavily on hands-on animal and veterinary experience, not just strong grades in science classes.

Cornell’s biggest advantage is the ecosystem around animal science and veterinary medicine. Undergrads can study in programs closely tied to animal biology, agriculture, and life sciences, and the university has facilities, farms, labs, and hospital settings that make it easier to build relevant experience over multiple years.

Advising is another real differentiator. At Cornell, pre-vet students are part of a campus environment where the prerequisite courses, recommendation pathways, and experiential expectations for vet school are well understood. Because the vet school is right there, the route from undergraduate coursework to shadowing, research, and mentorship is more visible and more established.

Harvard will absolutely give you excellent academics and strong preparation in the sciences, and you can get into vet school from there. But Harvard does not have the same built-in pre-vet network, animal-focused academic options, or day-to-day proximity to a veterinary school and teaching hospital.
