George Washington University vs UVA for internships: which one is better for internship opportunities?

I’m trying to choose between these two schools and internships are a big factor for me. I know both have strong reputations, but I’m more interested in which one tends to make it easier for students to find good internship opportunities while in college.

I’m especially thinking about access to employers, networking, and whether the school’s location or career support really makes a difference.

George Washington University has the edge for internships during the school year because its location in Washington, DC puts students much closer to a huge concentration of employers in government, policy, nonprofits, media, consulting, and international affairs. At GW, internships are woven into the student experience in a very practical way, and many students intern part time during the semester without needing to leave campus life behind. That proximity matters when employers want students who can come in a few days a week, attend networking events in person, or convert a short-term role into something longer.

The biggest differentiator is access. GW students can reach federal agencies, Capitol Hill, think tanks, advocacy groups, embassies, and major employers by Metro, which makes semester internships much more realistic. UVA students absolutely get strong internships too, especially in business, finance, tech, and policy, but Charlottesville is not the same kind of day-to-day internship market, so many UVA students rely more on summer opportunities or travel to larger cities.

Another difference is how naturally networking happens. At GW, alumni and employers are already in the city, and that makes coffee chats, information sessions, site visits, and part-time internships easier to stack into a normal week. UVA has a very strong alumni network and excellent name recognition, especially on the East Coast, but the networking process can feel a bit more destination-based because many key opportunities are concentrated outside Charlottesville.

Career support also plays out differently in practice. UVA has outstanding resources and a very established recruiting culture, particularly through schools and programs tied to commerce, policy, and leadership. But if your priority is frequent, in-semester internship access and being physically near employers, GW creates fewer logistical barriers, which often translates into more immediate opportunities while you are still taking classes.
