George Washington vs Wake Forest for internship opportunities: which is better for undergraduates?

George Washington has the clearer edge for undergraduate internship opportunities, mainly because of its location in Washington, DC and how tightly internships are woven into student life there. Being in downtown DC gives students direct access during the school year to federal agencies, nonprofits, media organizations, consulting firms, hospitals, and international institutions. At GW, it is common for undergrads to hold part-time internships while taking classes because employers are close enough to reach by Metro or even on foot.

That proximity matters a lot more than reputation alone. A school-year internship in DC is often easier to sustain than one that requires summer-only planning, and GW students can build experience across multiple semesters instead of relying on one big summer opportunity. For students interested in politics, international affairs, public health, business, communications, law-related work, or policy, GW benefits from being in one of the most internship-dense cities in the country.

Wake Forest does offer strong support and solid outcomes, but Winston-Salem does not provide the same volume or variety of in-semester opportunities right outside campus. Wake students can absolutely land internships, especially through alumni connections, career services, and summer placements, but they are more likely to depend on planned breaks, commuting, or relocation for certain fields. The school’s smaller size and strong advising can help with access, but the surrounding market is simply narrower.

Another important difference is how each school’s culture treats internships. At GW, professional experience is a normal part of the undergraduate rhythm, and many students arrive expecting to connect coursework with DC-based work early on. Wake can be excellent for mentorship and a more traditional campus experience, but for realistic, frequent, during-the-school-year internship access, GW is the more advantageous choice.
