George Washington vs Wake Forest for pre-med: which is better for undergrad?

I’m trying to decide between George Washington and Wake Forest for pre-med. I know both can work for med school, but I’m mostly trying to understand which one tends to be better for the actual undergrad experience as a pre-med student.

I care about things like access to research, advising, clinical opportunities, and how competitive or stressful the pre-med environment feels.

Wake Forest is the stronger undergraduate pre-med option for most students. It offers a more cohesive campus experience and a reputation for strong advising and undergraduate support in the sciences. George Washington has outstanding location-based clinical access in DC, but Wake tends to give pre-meds a more balanced day-to-day environment.

One big differentiator is how the academic and advising structure feels. Wake is known for being more residential and undergraduate-focused, which often translates into easier relationship-building with professors, clearer advising, and less of the logistical sprawl that can come with an urban campus. For pre-med students, that matters because recommendation letters, mentoring, and committee support often depend on those relationships.

Research and clinical exposure are available at both schools, but they show up differently. GW benefits from being in Washington, DC, with many hospitals, public health organizations, and federal research settings nearby, so students who are proactive can tap into a wide range of opportunities.

The pre-med atmosphere is another meaningful difference. Wake often feels more contained and community-oriented, which can make the process intense but still more personal. GW can be excellent for independent students, but the urban environment and larger web of outside opportunities can make the pre-med path feel more self-directed and, for some students, more fragmented.

Cost should still matter in the final decision. Since medical school is expensive, a substantial price difference could outweigh the edge Wake has in undergraduate pre-med support.
