George Washington University or American University for city life?

George Washington University is the clear pick for city life. Its main Foggy Bottom campus sits right in central D.C., next to the State Department, the National Mall area, and multiple Metro stops, so the city feels woven into daily student life rather than somewhere you travel to on weekends. American University is in D.C. too, but its Tenleytown location feels more residential and removed from the core of the city.

At GW, stepping off campus basically means stepping into downtown Washington. Students are surrounded by office buildings, museums, restaurants, internships, and major landmarks, and it is easy to get around without planning much in advance. That convenience matters a lot if you want the kind of college experience where grabbing dinner in another neighborhood, going to an event, or heading to an internship feels spontaneous.

American has a more traditional enclosed campus, which some students prefer, but that setup changes the city experience. You can absolutely use D.C. from AU, especially with the shuttle to the Tenleytown Metro and access to neighborhoods like Georgetown and Dupont, yet it usually takes more intention and transit time. The result is that AU often feels like a campus in a city, while GW feels like a campus that is part of the city.

That difference also shapes the social atmosphere. GW students tend to build routines around D.C. itself, including internships during the semester, museum visits, neighborhood exploring, and events across the city. At American, students often spend more of their everyday time on campus first, then head into the city when they choose to. If being connected to Washington day to day is the priority, GW has the stronger edge.
