George Washington University vs American University for campus location: which has the better location?

For day-to-day convenience, George Washington usually feels more central and easier to navigate without planning much ahead. Its Foggy Bottom campus is right in the middle of DC, near the Metro, downtown offices, the National Mall, Georgetown, and a lot of internships, restaurants, and city activity. American’s campus in Northwest DC is attractive and more traditionally collegiate, but it sits in a quieter residential area, so everyday life often involves a bit more transit time.

GW tends to fit students who want the city to feel like an extension of campus. You can step outside and be surrounded by coffee shops, apartment buildings, museums, government offices, and internship sites, and that convenience matters if you expect to be out in the city often. The tradeoff is that it feels less like a closed-off campus and more like living in an urban neighborhood with university buildings woven through it.

American makes more sense for students who want a clearer campus boundary and a calmer home base. The campus itself is greener and more self-contained, which many students find easier socially and mentally, especially if they want a stronger distinction between school space and city space. You still have access to DC, and the Tenleytown area nearby is useful, but it does not feel as instantly connected to the center of the city as GW does.

If your priority is convenience, walkability to major DC destinations, and a location that puts internships and city life right outside your door, GW has the edge. If your priority is a more classic campus feel in a quieter part of the city, American’s location may feel more comfortable even though it is a little less plugged into DC on a daily basis.
