Georgetown vs. William & Mary for internships: which school has better internship opportunities for undergrads?

Georgetown has the edge for internships, especially if you want strong access during the school year without having to build everything from scratch. Its Washington, DC location makes part-time internships far more realistic, and the university is tightly connected to government, policy, nonprofits, media, consulting, and international affairs. For undergrads who want experience while classes are in session, that day-to-day proximity matters a lot.

The biggest differentiator is location. Georgetown students can commute to internships on Capitol Hill, at federal agencies, think tanks, embassies, advocacy groups, and major employers in the city during a normal semester. William & Mary students can absolutely intern, especially in Williamsburg, Richmond, Norfolk, or over the summer in DC, but it usually takes more planning and often depends more on breaks, travel, or a heavier commute.

Another difference is how built-in the pipeline feels. Georgetown has long-established internship culture in fields tied to DC, and many employers are used to recruiting Georgetown students specifically for in-semester roles. That does not mean William & Mary lacks support or outcomes, because it has a strong alumni network and solid career services, but Georgetown tends to make the process feel more embedded in campus life rather than something you arrange mostly around the academic calendar.

Summer internships are strong from both schools, but Georgetown still benefits from its network density. Students are already in the city, already making contacts, and often already know professors, alumni, or supervisors who can open doors to the next role. William & Mary can be excellent if you are self-directed and willing to travel for opportunities, but for easier access to frequent, high-quality undergraduate internships, Georgetown is the more advantageous place.
