The biggest practical tradeoff is proximity versus reach: Georgetown gives you day-to-day access to DC internships during the semester, while Virginia Tech can still connect you to DC opportunities but usually with more planning, commuting, or a summer-only focus. Georgetown is located in Washington itself, so students can realistically intern part time during the academic year with government offices, nonprofits, think tanks, embassies, media outlets, and consulting firms. Virginia Tech has strong alumni and employer connections in the broader DC and Northern Virginia area, but Blacksburg is far enough away that regular in-person semester internships in DC are much less convenient.

That location difference matters a lot if your goal is to build experience steadily over four years. At Georgetown, students often weave internships into the school week, and the school’s programs in politics, policy, international affairs, business, and communications are closely tied to the city’s employer base. Being nearby also makes networking easier because attending panels, coffee chats, and short-notice interviews is much more realistic.

Virginia Tech is not shut out of DC at all. It has a substantial presence in Northern Virginia and strong pathways into tech, engineering, government contracting, cybersecurity, and policy-adjacent work, especially through its DC-area footprint and alumni network. But from the main campus in Blacksburg, the practical rhythm is different: students are more likely to pursue DC internships in the summer, over breaks, or through specific programs rather than casually taking the Metro to an internship during the semester.

If DC internships are the main factor, Georgetown has the clearer edge because access is built into everyday student life rather than something you have to engineer around distance. Virginia Tech can absolutely lead to DC opportunities, especially in tech-oriented fields, but Georgetown makes year-round DC involvement much easier and more immediate.
