Is Georgetown worth it compared with Notre Dame for an undergraduate degree?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Georgetown gives you unmatched access to Washington, D.C. and especially strong pipelines into politics, policy, international affairs, consulting, and finance, while Notre Dame offers a more cohesive residential campus, stronger traditional school spirit, and often a more straightforward undergraduate experience. Georgetown’s location shapes internships during the school year in a way very few universities can match, and its Walsh School of Foreign Service and government-related ecosystem are real advantages. Notre Dame, though, is known for an unusually loyal alumni network, a tight dorm-based community, and an undergraduate-centered feel that many students find easier to plug into day to day.

In terms of value, Georgetown is worth it over Notre Dame mainly when you know you want to take advantage of D.C. while you are still an undergrad. That can matter a lot if you want Capitol Hill, think tanks, embassies, nonprofits, or policy-adjacent work before graduation. Georgetown also tends to feel more urban, independent, and career-connected early on, whereas Notre Dame often feels more structured, communal, and campus-focused.

For undergraduate experience alone, many students would say Notre Dame is the smoother place to spend four years. Its residential system is a huge part of student life, and the social culture tends to be more unified around campus traditions, athletics, and dorm communities. Georgetown has plenty of community too, but students often have to be more intentional about building it because the city and internship culture can pull people in different directions.

Academically, both are excellent, but Georgetown has a clearer edge in international relations, political science, and D.C.-linked fields. Notre Dame is especially compelling if you want a classic residential college environment with strong academics across many disciplines, plus a deep alumni base that is famously responsive. For some students, that network translates into just as much practical value as Georgetown’s location.

If cost is similar and your interests line up with D.C.-based opportunities, Georgetown has a strong case. If the price is meaningfully higher and you are looking for the best overall undergraduate experience rather than a location-specific advantage, Notre Dame is often the smarter choice.
