Is Dartmouth or Cornell better for computer science?

I’m trying to compare Dartmouth and Cornell for computer science and keep seeing different opinions. I know both are strong schools, but I’m having trouble figuring out which one is generally considered better for CS overall.

I’m mainly interested in how they compare in reputation, resources, and opportunities for an undergrad CS student.

Cornell is generally considered stronger for computer science overall. Its CS program has a higher national and international reputation, a much larger faculty, broader course selection, and deeper recruiting pipelines into big tech, startups, and research labs. For an undergraduate focused mainly on maximizing CS resources and industry opportunities, Cornell usually has the edge.

Cornell’s computer science program is housed in a major engineering and computing ecosystem, with extensive offerings in systems, AI, theory, machine learning, robotics, graphics, HCI, and more. It also benefits from stronger scale: more specialized classes, more research groups, more peers deeply focused on CS, and more frequent employer recruiting. That matters if you want flexibility to explore subfields or join labs early.

Dartmouth is still excellent, just different. Its CS department is smaller, which can mean tighter-knit classes, easier faculty access, and a more intimate undergraduate experience. Dartmouth can be especially appealing if you want strong academics in CS but prefer a smaller campus culture, closer professor relationships, and a broader liberal arts feel rather than a large engineering-heavy environment.

In terms of opportunities, Cornell usually offers more sheer volume. You are likely to find more upper-level electives, more student project teams tied to engineering and computing, and a larger on-campus recruiting presence for software roles. Dartmouth students still place well, including in tech, but the advantage there is often personalized advising and community rather than scale.

So if the question is which school is generally considered better for CS, the answer is Cornell. If the question is which is better for you, Dartmouth becomes more competitive if you value smaller classes, closer mentoring, and a less intense preprofessional tech culture.
