Is Brown University more fun than Northwestern University for undergraduates?

I’m trying to get a feel for campus life, not just academics. I’ve heard both schools are strong, but I’m wondering which one tends to feel more social and fun day to day.

I’m mostly trying to understand what the student experience is like outside of class, since that matters a lot to me when I think about where I’d fit best.

Brown usually has the reputation of feeling more openly social, quirky, and student-driven day to day, while Northwestern often feels more structured, high-energy, and activity-packed. Brown’s open curriculum gives students a lot of flexibility, and that often spills over into campus culture: more spontaneity, more mixing across interests, and a less pre-professional vibe. Northwestern is also very social, but the quarter system, strong school spirit, and heavy involvement in theater, athletics, and student organizations can make the experience feel busier and more scheduled.

If by “fun” you mean laid-back, creative, and less pressured, Brown probably comes out ahead for many undergrads. Providence is a smaller college city, and a lot of social life stays centered around campus, friend groups, clubs, performances, and informal events. Brown students often describe the atmosphere as collaborative and pretty unpretentious, which can make it easier to explore different scenes without feeling boxed in.

If by “fun” you mean constant activity, big-event energy, and lots happening every week, Northwestern may feel more exciting. Evanston gives you a traditional residential campus on Lake Michigan, and Chicago is easily accessible, which adds concerts, food, internships, and city weekends. Northwestern also tends to have stronger rah-rah energy than Brown, especially around athletics and major campus productions.

So the better answer is that Brown is often seen as more relaxed-fun, while Northwestern is more packed-fun. Brown may suit someone who wants freedom, eccentricity, and a socially easygoing culture. Northwestern may suit someone who wants school spirit, organized involvement, and a faster-paced social calendar.
