Is Brown considered more prestigious than Williams College?
I’m trying to understand how people generally compare these two schools in terms of prestige and reputation. I know Brown is an Ivy and Williams is a top liberal arts college, but I’m not sure how that difference affects the way they’re viewed.
I’m asking more about the overall perception than specific rankings.

In general public perception, Brown is usually seen as more prestigious overall because it is an Ivy League university with much broader name recognition. Williams is extremely respected, especially in academic and admissions circles, but its reputation is strongest among people who know liberal arts colleges well. So if you mean broad, casual prestige, Brown usually carries more of that; if you mean academic reputation within undergraduate education, Williams is often viewed as equally elite and sometimes stronger.
A big reason is visibility. Brown is part of the Ivy League, has graduate and professional programs, and is more likely to be recognized nationally and internationally by employers, relatives, and people outside higher education. Williams is one of the most prestigious liberal arts colleges in the country, but liberal arts colleges are smaller and less familiar to the general public, so they often get less automatic prestige from name alone.
That said, Williams has an outstanding reputation for teaching, undergraduate focus, and sending students to top graduate schools. Among people in education, finance, consulting, academia, and selective admissions, Williams is often regarded as a top-tier school, not meaningfully below Brown in quality. In some circles, especially those that value small classes and close faculty access, Williams may even be viewed more favorably for the undergraduate experience.
