Amherst vs Columbia for pre-law: which is better for preparing for law school?

I’m a high school student trying to figure out which college would set me up better for law school later. I’ve narrowed it down to Amherst and Columbia, but I’m not sure how much “pre-law” really matters compared with overall academics and advising.

I’m mostly looking at which one would give me a stronger foundation for LSAT prep, writing, and getting into a good law school.

For pre-law, Amherst and Columbia can both prepare you very well, but Amherst is often the slightly better choice if you want close faculty access, strong writing development, and individualized advising. Amherst has no core curriculum, very small classes, and a tutorial-style academic culture that can sharpen the reading, argumentation, and discussion skills that matter for the LSAT and law school. Columbia offers outstanding academics too, but its biggest advantages are the Core’s emphasis on close reading and writing, plus being in New York City with easier access to legal internships during the school year.

The most important thing is that law schools do not require a specific pre-law major, and neither school has a special admissions edge just because of the name alone. GPA, LSAT, writing ability, recommendations, and sustained academic performance matter far more. On that front, Amherst is especially strong because professors are accessible, undergraduate teaching is the focus, and it can be easier to stand out for recommendations and research or thesis work.

Columbia can be excellent if you know you want an urban environment and want regular exposure to courts, nonprofits, policy groups, or legal internships in Manhattan. Its Core Curriculum is genuinely useful for future law students because it builds close reading and analytical writing habits.

If your priority is the best undergraduate learning environment for law school preparation, I would lean Amherst. If your priority is pairing top academics with New York City access and practical legal exposure, I would lean Columbia.
