Amherst vs Columbia for city life: which is better for a student who wants an urban college experience?

I’m trying to decide between Amherst and Columbia, and one of the biggest factors for me is the overall city experience. I want to know which school gives a stronger sense of being in a real city day to day, not just on campus.

I’m interested in things like access to restaurants, events, transit, and just having a busy urban environment around me while still being a student.

Columbia is clearly the better choice for a true urban college experience. It is in Morningside Heights in Manhattan, with immediate access to New York City’s restaurants, museums, internships, nightlife, and public transit, so city life is part of daily student life rather than something you travel to occasionally. Amherst College, by contrast, is in a small New England town with a classic residential campus feel, and the surrounding area is much quieter and less urban.

At Columbia, you can step off campus and be on the subway within minutes, which makes it easy to reach other neighborhoods, events, and job opportunities across the city. Even the area around campus has a steady city rhythm, with busy streets, local businesses, and constant activity. For a student who wants to feel surrounded by a real city every day, Columbia delivers that in a way Amherst does not.

Amherst has its own strengths, but they are different. The town of Amherst has cafes, bookstores, restaurants, and the broader Five College Consortium adds more options in nearby Northampton, South Hadley, and the surrounding area. Still, this is much more of a small college town experience than an urban one. You would likely need buses, rides, or planning to access many off-campus activities, and the pace is noticeably calmer.
