What are some good colleges with no essay and no application fee?

I'm starting my college application process and I'm really worried about how expensive application fees can get, especially since I want to apply to a bunch of schools. I also feel pretty overwhelmed by all the supplemental essays, so I'm hoping to find colleges that are both free to apply to and don't require an essay.

Does anyone have a list of decent schools where I could submit an application without having to write an essay or pay a fee? I'm open to schools in any state, although I'm mostly looking at the Midwest and South. My stats are above average for most state schools, if that helps. Would love to hear any suggestions or personal experiences that people have had with these kinds of colleges.

I also wonder if applying to no essay/no fee colleges can hurt your chances in any way, like if they're less selective or don't offer as much aid. Any advice would be appreciated!

It's totally understandable to look for ways to cut down on both application costs and essay workload. There are definitely good colleges out there that offer no-fee, no-essay applications, especially if you're flexible on location.

A few notable options in the Midwest and South include:

- University of Dayton (Ohio): Admissions have no application fee, and you can apply through the Common App without a separate essay. While some test-optional applicants might be asked for additional info, many are not. Dayton is known for a supportive community and good merit aid, especially for stronger applicants.

- University of Minnesota-Morris: No application fee, no required essay, and located in a small town with a strong liberal arts focus. It's part of the larger UMN system and offers solid academics with a personalized feel.

- Wabash College (Indiana): All-male liberal arts college, no app fee, no essay required for the standard application. Wabash is known for its strong alumni network and generous scholarships.

- Saint Louis University (Missouri): SLU has no app fee and does not require an additional essay if you apply through the Common App. They offer a good mix of academics and campus life.

- Arkansas Tech University: No application fee, and they have one of the simplest applications out there. They're open to above-average students and can be a solid value.

Some other notable mentions that often waive fees or essays—especially during application 'free days/weeks' or for online applications—are:

a) University of Southern Mississippi
b) Truman State University (Missouri)
c) University of North Dakota
d) Grand View University (Iowa)
e) Austin Peay State University (Tennessee)

For many of these schools, if you apply directly through their own website or during certain windows, you can avoid both the application fee and an essay section.

Applying to no-fee/no-essay colleges does not hurt your chances. In fact, these schools usually want to encourage more applications, and many still offer solid aid packages. However, some highly selective or national name-brand schools do tend to have fees and essay requirements because they're more competitive. If your stats are strong, you may get better scholarships at the schools listed above, since they often use grades/scores as a big part of their merit aid formulas.

A personal tip: I had a friend who applied to a mix of no-fee/no-essay schools and more traditional ones and ended up with several good merit offers at the 'easier' applications. It gave him peace of mind during application season.

Finally, always double-check each college's website, since requirements can change year to year. Some schools also offer application fee waivers if you meet certain criteria, so it's worth emailing admissions if you’re concerned about cost. Good luck with your college search!
