Michigan or Stanford for pre-med: which is better for preparing for medical school?

I’m trying to decide between Michigan and Stanford and I’m interested in pre-med. I know both are strong schools overall, but I’m mostly trying to understand which one tends to be better for preparing students for medical school in terms of classes, advising, research, and overall support.

I’m a high school senior and want to choose the school that will give me the best foundation if I end up applying to med school later.

Stanford is usually the stronger choice for pre-med support if cost is comparable, but Michigan is also excellent and can prepare you very well for medical school. Michigan has outstanding science departments and a top medical school on campus, but because it is much larger, access to some opportunities can feel less automatic and more self-directed.

For classes, both schools will cover the core pre-med requirements well. Michigan has more very large intro STEM courses, especially in biology and chemistry, though it also offers strong upper-level options and plenty of serious academic resources.

For research, both are excellent, but Stanford has a real edge in undergraduate access relative to its size. Michigan also has extensive research through its medical campus and hospitals, but students often need to be more proactive navigating a much larger system.

For advising and support, Stanford tends to feel more personalized. Michigan does have pre-health advising, strong hospital volunteering options, and a huge alumni network, but the experience can vary more depending on how independently you seek things out. If you want a high-resource environment with close advising and easier faculty access, Stanford is probably better for pre-med. If Michigan is substantially cheaper, though, it becomes a very compelling option because medical school admissions do not require an elite undergraduate name, and avoiding extra debt matters a lot.
