Which colleges don't require any supplemental essays?

I'm building my application list and starting to realize how much work the supplemental essays add up to. I know a lot of schools ask for extra writing beyond the Common App essay, but I'm hoping to include a few colleges that don't have any supplemental essays at all.

Does anyone know of schools where you only have to submit the main Common App or Coalition App essay, without any additional questions or short answers? If you have any recommendations or personal experiences with applying to these types of schools, I'd really appreciate it. Also, are there any good schools (either public or private) that fit this criteria?

You’re right: those supplemental essays can really pile up, so it’s smart to look for options with fewer writing requirements. Some colleges don’t have any supplemental essays at all, which can definitely help lighten your workload.

Many large public universities, especially flagships and some state schools, are known for not requiring supplemental essays. Examples include the University of Alabama, University of Minnesota Twin Cities, and University of Nebraska–Lincoln. These schools only require the main Common App or Coalition App essay and basic application info—no separate essays or short answer questions are needed.

Several well-regarded private colleges also skip supplementals. For instance, Tulane University (for most applicants), DePaul University, and Drexel University generally don’t require additional essays outside the main Common App or Coalition App essay, although make sure to check their current application pages, as requirements can shift year to year.

Another tip: Some schools ask for short, optional responses or minor questions, like a “Why this major?” blurb, but you can search for schools with truly no extra writing pieces. You can find updated lists on their admissions websites or through resources like the Common App’s requirements grid.

Personal experience: Applying to schools like the University of Pittsburgh and University of Arkansas, I only needed to write one main essay. Both were straightforward, and it freed up a lot of time for other applications.

If you’re aiming for ‘good’ schools across a range of selectivity, look at:
- University of Alabama
- University of Arizona
- University of Arkansas
- University of Minnesota Twin Cities
- Tulane University (mostly essay-free)
- DePaul University
- Drexel University

Finally, remember that sometimes the schools with no supplementals get a high volume of applications because students see less work, which can make them more competitive in terms of acceptance rates. Be sure to review admission statistics and average admitted student profiles as you build your list.

Double check each school’s application requirements the year you apply, as they sometimes change their policies. Planning ahead with a mix of schools with and without supplements is a great way to manage your college app workload.
