How important are IB scores for University of Chicago admission?
I’m applying to UChicago and I’m trying to understand how much my IB scores actually matter in the admission process.
My school uses the IB program, and I know my grades and course rigor are important, but I’m not sure whether predicted or final IB scores are a major factor or just part of the bigger picture.

IB scores matter for UChicago, but they are usually one part of your academic record rather than a single make-or-break factor. The most important pieces are still your transcript, the rigor of your classes, and how consistently strong your performance is over time. For an IB student, predicted scores can matter during admissions because UChicago reviews applicants before final exam results are available, while final IB scores usually matter more for confirming preparation and for possible credit after enrollment.
In practice, UChicago will pay close attention to whether you are taking a demanding IB course load, especially HL courses, and whether your school record suggests you are thriving in that environment. Strong predicted scores help support that story. If your predicted scores are notably lower than your classroom grades, that can raise questions, but they are still considered alongside teacher recommendations, essays, activities, and the rest of your application.
Final IB scores generally do not drive the initial admission decision for most regular applicants because those results come out after decisions are released. They can still matter after admission if there is a major drop from your predicted performance or overall academic trend.
So the short version is that predicted IB scores are meaningful and can strengthen or weaken your academic profile, but they are not treated in isolation. UChicago is highly academic, so they want evidence that you can succeed in a very rigorous environment, and your IB coursework, grades, and predicted results all help show that.
