How should I plan AP courses for the University of Chicago admissions process?

For UChicago, the best AP plan is the most rigorous schedule that is still realistic for you, especially in the five core academic areas. They care a lot about course rigor in context, meaning what was available at your school and whether you challenged yourself thoughtfully over four years. A balanced senior schedule with strong classes in English, math, science, social science, and foreign language usually reads better than loading up on APs that do not fit your strengths or goals.

UChicago’s admissions process is holistic, but academic preparation matters a lot because the school is intensely intellectual and discussion-driven. In practice, that means they will generally like to see you continue with demanding courses senior year, not coast after junior year. If your school offers AP or similarly advanced classes, taking several that make sense for your interests is a good signal.

A strong approach is to prioritize APs tied to your intended academic direction while keeping broad rigor. For example, a student interested in economics or policy might choose AP Calc, AP English Lit, AP Gov or AP Macro, and a lab science if possible. A future STEM applicant might emphasize AP Calc BC, AP Physics, AP Chemistry or AP Biology, while still keeping a challenging English or history course.
