What is the undergraduate research culture like at the University of Chicago?

UChicago has a very real undergraduate research culture, but it is generally not the kind of place where opportunities are handed to you automatically. Research is common across disciplines, especially in the sciences, economics, psychology, political science, and history, and the university has structured support through the College Center for Research and Fellowships, funded summer programs, and the Metcalf internship network. The atmosphere is intellectual and faculty-driven, so students who actively reach out, build relationships in classes, and follow up on labs or projects tend to do well.

For STEM students, getting into research is usually very doable, though often after some initiative. It is not unusual for students to start with smaller tasks and grow into more independent work over time.

In the social sciences and humanities, research is also prominent, but it can look different from bench science. Students often work as research assistants, do archival work, contribute to faculty projects, or pursue their own thesis-style research with grants. UChicago is especially strong here because faculty scholarship is such a central part of campus culture, and undergrads often get pulled into that world earlier than at many universities.
